Local / Regional

The Kindling Trust: An inspiring Manchester-based organisation which champions local food production and organic farming. In the course of developing an agroforestry project they have grafted hundreds of fruit trees suited to local conditions and run events and skills sessions and volunteering opportunities:

Abundance Tameside: A community harvesting project in Tameside, managed by Operation Farm, which works with volunteers to collect fruit which would otherwise go to waste for pressing at public events or processing into juice and cider:

Northern Fruit Group: A membership based group of individuals; both amateur and professional, who are interested in the growing of fruit. Runs shows, training gardens, workshops and regular talks.

The Orchard Project: A national organisation promoting community orchards. Information about community orchard locations, guidance, volunteering, orchard training and events:

Peoples Trust for Endangered Species: Run a project to map and support traditional orchards. Information on orchard biodiversity, practical guides and a useful section on fruit variety identification, including DNA fingerprinting.

Orchard Network: A partnership of organisations promoting conservation of orchard fruit trees and varieties. Promote national blossom day and pages include a blossom calendar with pictures for identification.

Common Ground: A small arts and environmental charity which between 1983 and 2013 pioneered many innovative projects combining environmental issues with cultural activities to inspire community engagement and action in relation to local environments. Their projects focusing on orchards which generated publications, conferences, maps and events was influential, including the establishment of Apple Day in October as a calendar event, which is still widely celebrated.
